A Preface to the Veil
As October deepens and the veil thins, we gather stories from across the world—rituals that honour the dead, the unseen, and the turning of the year. This series, Days of Observance: All Hallows Eve, offers four cultural portraits of threshold time: each one a lantern, each one a whisper.
From the firelit hills of Ireland and Scotland to the marigold altars of Mexico, from midnight chants in the Philippines to the shadowed castles of Romania – these observances reflect the many ways humans mark the mystery of endings and return.
Each post is a capsule of history, etymology, ritual, flora, and folklore. You’ll find sacred foods, ancestral tales, and closing gestures you can enact yourself—small acts of remembrance, rooted in place and spirit.
This is not a celebration of fear. It is a reverent unfolding of memory, myth, and cultural continuity.
We invite you to walk with us, week by week, toward October 31.
Let the veil open gently.
